MMA Shorts Buying Guide

MMA-Shorts-Buying-Guide

MMA is a contact sport that requires agility, speed and a mastery of different techniques and disciplines. With this in mind, protection and freedom of movement are two key components that are factored in to any specialist MMA equipment or apparel.

MMA Shorts are designed to make sure that the wearer has as much freedom of movement as possible, whilst staying securely in place and not shifting around during a fight.

There are a number of common features that different brands use to ensure that their shorts are fit for purpose. We’ve outlined some of the most popular features of MMA Shorts that you will find so you know what to look out for.

Lightweight & Quick Drying

MMA Shorts are often made from a Polyester / Spandex composite material, making them lightweight and flexible.

The composite materials used often have moisture wicking properties that helps to draw the sweat from your skin to the outside of the fabric of the shorts, enabling you to remain cool and dry.

Some brands will also feature material that is both sweat and blood repellant too.

Short Length

Traditionally, MMA Shorts have been of a fairly standard ‘board short’ style length, but recently we have seen increasing number of shorter styles and even some Vale Tudo / MMA hybrid cross over styles.

The length of the short is really down to your personal preference and how comfortable you feel when training or competing.

Stretch Panels

MMA can involve quick movements in different directions and it’s important that the garments you wear move with you and allow you to do this.

The inclusion of spandex stretch panels in the crotch area of the shorts is a common feature that allows the shorts to stretch and move without the risk of any embarrassing tears or splits occurring.

Split Seams

Similar to the stretch panels, spilt seams down either leg allow the wearer to freely move about when grappling and execute high leg kicks without being restricted or risking tearing the shorts.

Combined Velcro and Drawstring Fastening

Keeping the shorts firmly in place without relying solely on tightening a drawstring regularly is a problem that has been overcome with the use of a combined velcro and drawstring enclosure system.

Whilst the enclosure systems on certain brands may be a little more elaborate than on others, the principles are the same.

Often two velcro panels, one across the waist and one on the front of the shorts are used to reinforce the traditional drawstring system to make sure your shorts don’t move and shift about when being worn.

Rubberised Waistbands

Another popular feature that is used to further reduce unwanted movement, is the rubberised waistband.

Rubberised waistbands provide additional grip and combined with the above mentioned enclosure systems, they do a good job of keeping your shorts in place.

With the basics covered above, all that is left for you to decide on the style and price range that suits you best.

MMA Fightwear Shin Guard Buying Guide

MMA-Shin-Guard-Buying-Guide

Looking at both MMA & Thai (or Striking) Shin Guards we have put together this guide to help you decide which kind is best for you.

On our site you will find that we have a selection of both kinds of Shin Guards and they may appear similar on first glance if you are unsure about what to look for.

MMA Shin Guards

Ikusa-Shin-Blog

The main purpose of MMA Shin Guards is to provide you with protection from strikes as well as staying in place during grappling.

They are lighter in weight than their Thai counterparts, with thiner padding and are usually constructed with a full neoprene backing as shown in the image below.

Neoprene-Shin-Blog

Their light weight design is to ensure that you are able to move around as much as possible without restriction when engaged in grappling training.

The full neoprene backing acts like a sleeve that hugs your leg, keeping the shin guard from shifting around as much as possible.

Unlike with the straps used on Thai Shin Guards, the smooth neoprene backing will not get caught on your opponent or the mat, reducing the chance of the Shin Guards becoming loose or scraping your training partner.

It is worth checking out the different kinds of MMA Shin Guard that we have on offer, as different models will have varying levels of padding and protection and also may vary slightly when it comes to sizing.

Thai Shin Guards

Tokushu-Shin-Blog

Thai Shin GuardsAi??(or Striking Shin Guards) are bulkier with thicker padding to provide you with increased protection for more intense striking training.

They are built to withstand the repeated powerful kicks common to Muay Thai and other forms of Martial Arts that incorporate regular kick striking drills.

Thia-Shin-Foot-BlogYou will also notice the larger padded area protecting the foot, this is designed to help guard against any stray kicks that hit you in this area.

As there is much less chance of the kind of close contact that you would experience when grappling, the Thai Shin Guard tends to use a strap enclosure system as opposed to the neoprene backing.

Whilst it is still important for these Shin Guards to stay firmly in place, there is less chance of them becoming caught on your opponent or shifting around as they would if you were grappling.

Again, it is worth checking out the different models that we have due to some variations in sizing, padding and enclosure systems.

Sizing

Before purchasing any of the above, be sure to have your tape measure to hand and check out the Size Guides displayed for each product to make sure that you get the right fit for you!

UFC 174 – Hayabusa Sponsored Fighters

It’s UFC 174 this weekend and Hayabusa will be proudly represented by fighters throughout the fight card on the night.

From the main card, the Belarusian Andrei “Pit Bull” Arlovski will be wearing the Hayabusa Haburi Compression Shorts as he faces up against Brendan “The Hybrid” Schaub.

Arlovski sees a long awaited return to the UFC after 6 years out following a hat trick of consecutive UFC wins back in 2008.

He’s hoping that his dangerous striking game will see him victorious on the night against a re-energised Brendan Schaub who is coming off back of two straight wins.

All competing in the Hayabusa Chikara Recast Performance Shorts, Hayabusa Europe would also like to wish undercard fighters, Yves Jabouin, Jason Saggo, Roland Delorme and Josh Shockley the best of luck in their respective matches on the night.

Wearing the Hayabusa Elevate T and sporting the Hayabusa logo on her shorts, former personal athletic trainer turned UFC fighter, Elizabeth Phillips faces up against fellow UFC debutant Valerie Letourneau.

UFC 174 Demetrious Johnson vs. Ali Bagautinov Preview

14th June (Vancouver, Canada)

We think this fight is going to be a big ask for the Ali Bagautinov. Despite coming off the back of three wins on the bounce, the Dagestan born fighter will do well to cope with explosive speed of the UFC Flyweight Champion, Demetrious Johnson.

If Bagautinov is to defy what we feel is the inevitable it will be important for him to slow “Mighty Mouse” down or engage and get his hands on him at close quarters and using his larger size to bully Johnson.

Easier said than done though, with his combination of speed, range and intelligent footwork, Johnson has many more weapons in his arsenal that should see him victorious on the night.

You can never write off an underdog, but we would be surprised to Bagautinov come out on top in this fight, even with master tactician Greg Jackson calling the shots in his cornerai??i??.
