MMA Study provides Lessons for All

LJMUWith the success of The UFC and other high profile television spectaculars, Mixed Martial Arts is certainly enjoying its profile as one of the most popular sports in the world.

But now it seems MMA is not just watched by millions of fans around the world, but is also the focus of top University academics

Several MMA athletes have teamed up with a major UK university to assist with groundbreaking research into one of the worldai??i??s best loved combat sports.

Fighters who are on the bill for the upcoming Cage Warriors event at the ECHO Arena in Liverpool recently visited Liverpool John Moores University to undergo scans and for a general health and fitness check-up.

PhD student Ben Crighton is researching mixed martial arts (MMA) for his three-year course of study and couldnai??i??t turn down the opportunity of working with some of the most exciting up-and-coming fighters around.

The student, who is also a conditioning coach, told The Liverpool ECHO: ai???MMA is the fastest growing sport in the world and; despite this there is currently no governing or regulatory body for MMA within the UK.

ai???This research will help promote the healthy and safe participation in this popular sport.ai???

The scans gave the athletes ai??i?? including Danny Roberts and Dean Garnett ai??i?? a unique chance to look at the inside their own bodies and the results provided a detailed breakdown of the their fat and muscle mass, as well as bone density.

LJMU is the first such institution in the UK to research MMA and the safe practice of the sport.

Benai??i??s PhD is a collaboration between the universityai??i??s Centre for Public Health and the School of Sport & Exercise Sciences and he is working alongside Safe MMA, a not-for-profit medical project set up to ensure the safety of MMA fighters in the UK.

As well as being a fantastic study aid, the results of the research also provide a valuable lesson to those inside the octagon too.

PhD supervisor, Dr Conan Leavey, said: ai???MMA is growing in popularity and it is important that any youngsters thinking of taking up the sport really appreciate the extremely high level of fitness that is required.

ai???From a public health perspective, it is essential that sport and exercise are promoted responsibly and participation in combat sports is made as safe as possible.ai???

Fighters Dean Garnett, 25 and Danny Roberts, 26, both from South Liverpool, said the research was a fascinating insight into the condition of their bodies as they prepared for their upcoming fights.

They said the biggest risk facing MMA fighters was those who went too far when it came to losing weight before fights, risking health problems like kidney failure.

ai???The sport is growing so the research theyai??i??re doing is important,ai??? said Garnett.

St-Pierre to Have ACL Surgery

St-PierreFormer UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre will have surgery to repair his torn ACL. He will see the same physicians with whom he had his last ACL surgery in 2011.

St-Pierre told FOX Sports that he injured his left knee last week towards the end of one of his training sessions when his foot got caught in the training mats..

Prior to tearing the ACL in his left knee, St-Pierre tore the same ligament in his right knee in 2011, forcing him out of the Octagon for several months after. Upon his return, he defeated interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit in November 2012.

Henderson to Face Cormier at UFC 175?

Dan-HendersonMMAFighting.com has reported that a UFC Light Heavyweight bout with title implications could be on the card at UFC 175.

That match-up could see Dan Henderson facing Daniel Cormier on the July PPV event, the same card that will feature a UFC Middleweight title bout between Chris Weidman and Lyoto Machida.

Although the fight has not been officially sanctioned, sources close to the fighters have confirmed the fight will take place, with an official announcement in the coming days.

Siver Issued with Temporary Suspension

dennissiverUFC featherweight Dennis Siver has been issued with a temporary suspension by the Nevada athletic commission after testing positive for the banned substance Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) following UFC 168 in December.

The suspension came as the state prepares to make a case against Siver in an upcoming commission hearing, perhaps as early as next month. At that time, state deputy attorney general Christopher Eccles will present Siver’s lab report. Siver will also have the opportunity to voice his defence.

Siver has recently blamed a supplement recommended to him by a new trainer that was assisting him with his diet and weight-cutting efforts. In that statement, Siver said he was “shocked” by the positive result.

MMA Round Up: Fight Night 38, Guillard Released

Henderson Wins Fight Night 38

dan-henderson-ufc-161Dan Henderson defeated Shogun Roa at UFC Fight Night 38 in Brazil on Saturday.

Henderson survived being dropped twice in the space of two to still give Rua a taste of his own medicine, as he stopped his opponent in the third round to earn the TKO victory in an eventful bout.

Henderson overcame a slow start against Rua to score a vicious knockout with a blow that left Rua in a confused state with a badly damaged nose.

Rua did the early stalking, pecking away at Henderson early with leg kicks, both inside and out, while managing to block Henderson’s early right overhand attempts.

But Rua picked up the intensity right from the opening of the second frame, landing another hard right and forcing Henderson into the clinch. They traded again and this time Shogun drilled Henderson with a blistering uppercut that sent Henderson to the mat again.

Henderson opened the third round with a series of stunning punches, but was unable to land a significant blow. In the clinch, however, Rua’s hands were down, and as they separated, Henderson cracked Rua with a crushing right hand that sent Shogun reeling.

Referee Herb Dean stopped the fight after 1 minute 31 seconds of the round and as Shogun stood, he collapsed backward in both agony and in a state of semi-consciousness.

Guillard Released from UFC

GuillardMelvin Guillard’s UFC run has come to an end after nearly nine years.

The decision comes after the 30-year-old lost a unanimous decision to Michael Johnson at UFC Fight Night 38 in London earlier this month and “The Young Assassin” was released from the UFC on Thursday night, according to his manager Malki Kawa.

Guillard made his debut on the second season of “The Ultimate Fighter” in 2005. Despite losing early in the tournament, Guillard defeated Marcus Davis via second-round TKO in the Finale to secure a spot in the organization.

The lightweight fighter went 12-9 inside the Octagon, with memorable wins against Dennis Siver, Gleison Tibau, Evan Dunham and Mac Danzig.
