What Weight Glove Should I Use? – Advice From Georges St Pierre

One of the most common questions that we get asked here at MMA Fightwear in relation to equipment is, “What size and weight glove should I use for sparring and bag work?”.

Check out the video below featuring Georges St Pierre and the Hayabusaai??? Sport Doctor, Dr. Knight as he gives his advice on the best weight glove to choose, depending on the type of training your are practicing, your skill level and your weight.

GSP references the need to have different gloves for different types of training to help ensure the longevity of your equipment, as well discussing some of the features of the Tokushu Series Boxing Gloves in terms of the protection that they provide.

MMA Fightwear Shin Guard Buying Guide

MMA-Shin-Guard-Buying-Guide

Looking at both MMA & Thai (or Striking) Shin Guards we have put together this guide to help you decide which kind is best for you.

On our site you will find that we have a selection of both kinds of Shin Guards and they may appear similar on first glance if you are unsure about what to look for.

MMA Shin Guards

Ikusa-Shin-Blog

The main purpose of MMA Shin Guards is to provide you with protection from strikes as well as staying in place during grappling.

They are lighter in weight than their Thai counterparts, with thiner padding and are usually constructed with a full neoprene backing as shown in the image below.

Neoprene-Shin-Blog

Their light weight design is to ensure that you are able to move around as much as possible without restriction when engaged in grappling training.

The full neoprene backing acts like a sleeve that hugs your leg, keeping the shin guard from shifting around as much as possible.

Unlike with the straps used on Thai Shin Guards, the smooth neoprene backing will not get caught on your opponent or the mat, reducing the chance of the Shin Guards becoming loose or scraping your training partner.

It is worth checking out the different kinds of MMA Shin Guard that we have on offer, as different models will have varying levels of padding and protection and also may vary slightly when it comes to sizing.

Thai Shin Guards

Tokushu-Shin-Blog

Thai Shin GuardsAi??(or Striking Shin Guards) are bulkier with thicker padding to provide you with increased protection for more intense striking training.

They are built to withstand the repeated powerful kicks common to Muay Thai and other forms of Martial Arts that incorporate regular kick striking drills.

Thia-Shin-Foot-BlogYou will also notice the larger padded area protecting the foot, this is designed to help guard against any stray kicks that hit you in this area.

As there is much less chance of the kind of close contact that you would experience when grappling, the Thai Shin Guard tends to use a strap enclosure system as opposed to the neoprene backing.

Whilst it is still important for these Shin Guards to stay firmly in place, there is less chance of them becoming caught on your opponent or shifting around as they would if you were grappling.

Again, it is worth checking out the different models that we have due to some variations in sizing, padding and enclosure systems.

Sizing

Before purchasing any of the above, be sure to have your tape measure to hand and check out the Size Guides displayed for each product to make sure that you get the right fit for you!

MMA Fightwear – UFC 174 Preview

UFC-174

UFC 174 Demetrious Johnson vs. Ali Bagautinov Preview

14th June (Vancouver, Canada)

We think this fight is going to be a big ask for the Ali Bagautinov. Despite coming off the back of three wins on the bounce, the Dagestan born fighter will do well to cope with explosive speed of the UFC Flyweight Champion, Demetrious Johnson.

If Bagautinov is to defy what we feel is the inevitable it will be important for him to slow “Mighty Mouse” down or engage and get his hands on him at close quarters and using his larger size to bully Johnson.

Easier said than done though, with his combination of speed, range and intelligent footwork, Johnson has many more weapons in his arsenal that should see him victorious on the night.

You can never write off an underdog, but we would be surprised to Bagautinov come out on top in this fight, even with master tactician Greg Jackson calling the shots in his cornerai??i??.

MMA Head Guard Buying Guide

MMA-Head-Guard-Buying-Guide

To protect your head and to help prevent concussion and other serious injuries, Head Guards are a kit bag essential, especially if you are planning to spar on a regular basis.

We have put together this simple buying guide to give you an idea of what to look for when choosing this important piece of equipment.

PADDING

It will come as no surprise that padding is important when choosing a Head Guard. As well as determining how well your face and head will be protected, the amount and type of padding will also have a bearing on the weight and comfort too.

Varying thicknesses in padding exist from product to product, you may find that the padding feels soft from brand new, where others will initially feel quite dense, but over time and use it softens up.

COMFORT

As with a lot of equipment, personal preference will determine comfort, but it is important Head Guard should feel as comfortable as possible.

How it fits and contours to the shape of your head, the type of inner lining (smooth or softer moisture wicking material style) and the amount of padding and coverage are all factors that will affect comfort.

The type of chin strap or padded chin area will also effect how comfortable the Head Guard will feel.

Comfort will also be determined by breathability. The level of which can be regulated by design features like ear holes and open top construction.

VISIBILITY

You will notice that different brands have different amounts of padded areas and coverage. Different brands will have varying amounts of forehead and cheek coverage around the face for example.

As well as offering varying amounts of protection to the different areas of your face, the amount of padded coverage will also affect your visibility as the wearer.

This is important to you as a fighter because being able to see a punch or kick before the impact will help your body to brace itself and of course, give you a better chance of manoeuvring to avoid being hit all together!

OVERALL

Ultimately when choosing a Head Guard, you are looking for one that will provide the utmost protection yet feel light enough to not be an annoyance or hinderance on your peripheral vision when fighting.

We have a choice of Head Guards available on our site from brands like Hayabusa & PRO MMA. Check out each of the products on offer and take time read up on their features to find out which one is right for you.

MMA News Round-Up: Dillashaw Ends 22 Fight Win Streak for Baraos at UFC 173

TJT.J. Dillashaw pulled off one of the greatest upset in the UFC’s 20-plus-year history when he stopped Renan Barao in the fifth round of their bantamweight title fight at UFC 173.

Dominating from start to finish Dillashaw inflicted the Brazilianai??i??s first defeat since his pro debut in April 2005, ending Barao’s 22-fight winning streak and 34-fight unbeaten record.

Dillashaw, a college wrestler, utilised his hands to defeat Barao, at the MGM Grand event, finishing the bout in the third minute of the fifth round when referee Herb Dean stopped the contest after Barao was sent to the canvas.

“He’s the best of the world and that’s what brought it out of me,” Dillashaw said. “I had to bring my A-game because I was fighting the best in the world.”

Despite Dillashaw using a lot of lateral movement and kicks early in the fight, Barao still stalked forward. But Dillashaw began to land his punches midway through the round and it was clear they were taking a toll on the Brazilian.

Barao had been knocked down with a right hand late in the first which nearly finished him, but his sheer resilience kept him in the fight.

But Dillashaw fought with great poise and never got rattled. He didn’t take unnecessary chances and stuck to his plan and repeatedly – blasting Barao with a barrage of hard and accurate shots.

The fight finally ended when Dillashaw landed a punch, a kick and another punch that put an exhausted Barao flat on his back.

Dillashaw immediately pounced and landed several hard shots on the ground until Dean stepped in to call an end to proceedings.

Pantangco Takes Sportsmanship to Another Level

Pantangco Tap outMike Pantangco took sportsmanship to a whole new level after deciding to tap-out despite dominating Jeremy Rasner during a fight in the Prison City Fight League in Jackson, Michigan.

In the YouTube footage, which had been seen over four million times since its posting, Pantangco was clearly winning over the taller Rasnerai??i??landing clinical punches, kicks and knee blows.

But rather than inflicting further damage to his opponent, Pantangco tapped out with just seconds left in the opening round.

ai???I just feel like thereai??i??s no point fighting him because he didnai??i??t train against me and I didnai??i??t train for him,ai??? Pantangco told AXS TV, explaining his surprising act of mercy rule.

Rasner was a last-minute replacement after Pantangcoai??i??s original opponent pulled out.

ai???I just feel like weai??i??re amateur fighters,ai??? Pantangco added. ai???We donai??i??t get money, we donai??i??t get paid and I know the only thing that the only thing Iai??i??m going to finish the fight is him to go in the hospital or get hurt. I just feel terrible so Iai??i??m just going to give him the win,ai???
